When Will the Coyotes Howl?
Hockey in Phoenix is looking questionable nowadays.
This is due in large part to Jerry Moyes who took the team into bankruptcy in May. Has hockey ever looked so dismal for one franchise? With months of not knowing where the club was headed they were not successful in selling season tickets or effectively marketing a team around a city where this game might not have survived.
Finally two weeks ago the Coyotes were sold to the league in an attempt to keep them in Arizona. But is this really the best thing for this franchise? One projected owner wanted to take the Phoenix Coyotes and re-locate them to Hamilton Ontario hoping to make them the 7th franchise north of the border. The Board of NHL Governors unanimously rejected this proposal.
In actuality would this be a bad move? I think not and this is why. Sure some people in Arizona would miss the Coyotes and the game of hockey but with attendance hovering in the low four digits with only four games drawing more than 10,000 fans; it might be time to place the team in an area where it can prosper.
Before Monday night’s game the NHL were in town to reaffirm their desire to keep the team in Arizona and to check on the progress that the team is making with attracting new fans and bringing back old supporters.
The goal is to keep this team in Phoenix/Glendale for years to come but only time will tell as well as revenue.
